Free State Roads heading for disaster

Posted on 12 Feb 2010
With the pothole's in our roads, and road accident deaths. Potholes are causing our vehicles a lot of damage every single day, and reading the newspapers, potholes is causing a lot of accidents with a lot of fatalities as a result of it. Are we heading for a nationwide disaster or should we be daclared as a nationwide disaster area already?

This pothole image was taken by Ettiene de Beer of the road between Viljoenskroon-Parys. Absolutely crazy to think that this road is still open to traffic. With nearly 14 deaths a day on our roads and potholes this size, one wonders when our roads and road accidents will be declared as National Disasters.

Its not only the national roads that have a problem. The roads in Viljoenskroon itself is full of potholes. There is signs that the Municipality is trying to fix this, but will potholes being filled with tar really help? It didn't in the past. I am no expert in fixing roads, but have seen in other towns that you have to open the pothole, fix the ground under the tar, compress it, and then put on new tar, and compress that as well.

A old saying is coming to mind. If you dont have the time or money to do it right the first time, Where are you going to get the time or money to do it over, and over, and over.
