Fast police action nabs 7 robbers

Seven of the nine business robbery suspects are expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court today.

The Hawks, together with police, arrested the suspects, who are allegedly from Hillbrow in Johannesburg, on Tuesday, following a business robbery at an MTN store at the Game Shopping Centre in Klerksdorp. According to police, four suspects entered the store armed with firearms while the other five waited outside in their vehicles.

Suspects threatened the workers and robbed the store of cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash. After robbing the store, the suspects fled the scene in two getaway cars, a Volkswagen Jetta and a Toyota Hi-Ace minibus with Gauteng registration numbers.

Police were informed and traced the suspects to the Vierfontein - Viljoenskroon road.

A chase of the suspects ensued and they were tracked down along the Potchefstroom - Viljoenskroon road.

Police pulled the vehicles over and the suspects tried to flee on foot. Seven were arrested and two escaped.

Stolen cellular phones worth R500000 were recovered from the minibus.

No one was injured and police are still searching for the two escaped suspects.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Zukiswa Mbombo commended the law enforcement agencies for the swift reaction in apprehending the suspects and recovering the stolen property.
